While most of you own cats, dogs, goldfish and maybe a lizard or some other odd type of pet, there are those who have pets that are much more exotic. Zoos are no longer the only place to see exotic animals, you might see one at your Boca Raton vet clinic if you are lucky. Here is a list of some exotic animals people have as pets.

Hissing Cockroach

While many will get grossed out and run, a few people will certainly be curious and want to hold one. The hissing cockroach is a native of Madagascar and can be expected to live one to three years. Hissing cockroaches are becoming increasingly popular as exotic pets, mainly due to the taboo factor and the fact they make a cool sound. But buyer beware, you can buy two cockroaches and get more than you bargained for as they do reproduce at a very quick rate.

Sugar Glider

The Sugar Glider is an adorable marsupial that originates in Australia. They come from the same general family as the Kangaroo, but are much smaller, reaching seven inches in length and weighing only about six ounces. There same fits them well as they love sweet foods and gliding through the air.

Sugar gliders are a popular exotic pet because they are incredibly social and bond easily with humans. You need to pay a lot of attention to them as they love interaction.

Hedgehog

Hedgehogs are cute, spiky looking creatures that come from Asia, Africa and Europe. Hedgehogs can weigh up to a 1.5 pounds and have an average lifespan of around three to eight years. They are very adorable, which is the main reason people want to keep them as pets. These cute creatures are very active at night, mainly because they have very poor eyesight and rely heavily on their sense of smell and their hearing.

Skunk

Yes, skunks do make excellent pets, once the scent gland has been removed. Despite their reputation, skunks are curious, clever and just love to be held. Also, skunks love to play and can be trained to use a litterbox. They have a lifespan of about 12 years and will weigh an average of eight to 12 pounds.

Muntjac Deer

In many ways, the Muntjac Deer is similar to the Pot-Bellied Pig as they are both very unique to their larger counterparts. A Muntjac deer reach the size of a large house cat and are said to be wonderful pets. Owners report they are extremely affectionate and they are certainly cute.

Ball Python

There are two types of people on this earth; those who like snakes and those who loathe them. And if you like snakes, you might want to consider getting a Ball python as a pet. We doubt that the red eyes and exotic colors of these snakes will entice snake haters, but that is no surprise. Just make sure you don't own other pets that might wind up as prey for your python.
